Deopham History

Percy Robert Hurrell

Private 200501 Percy Robert Hurrell was born in Paddington, London in c.1895. He enlisted in the 1st/4th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served on the Balkan front from 6th August 1915 and later in Palestine where he was killed in action at the Battle of Gaza on 19th April 1917, aged 22. He is remembered on the Jerusalem Memorial Panels 12 to 15 and on the Deopham War Memorial. He was the eldest son of Robert and Eleanor Hurrell.
At the time of the 1911 Census, Percy, then aged 16, was working at home in the household of his parents: Robert, born in Deopham, a farmer aged 42, and Eleanor, born in Chicheley, Buckingham, aged 45. They lived at Laurel Farm in Deopham Green, along with Percy’s siblings Mildred Eleanor, born in Paddington, London, a dairy worker aged 17, and Frank Thomas, born in Chelsea, aged 12 who was still at school.

In the above photograph, Elaine Peacock believes Percy Hurrell to be the second from the left.

Percy Hurrell is buried and commemorated at the Jerusalem Memorial: he is one of 3,300 who lost their lives and who are remembered at this site. The Memorial is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Percy Hurrell is commemorated on panel 13 of the Jerusalem Memorial, which is located on the left hand side of the above photograph as shown in the sketch below:

There is also a memorial to Percy Hurrell in the Deopham churchyard, located to the east of the chancel.

This bible is on a shelf below the war memorial in the church.
