Deopham History

Rev. Francis Charles Hingeston-Randolph

The Rev. F.C. Hingeston-Randolph appears in the Deopham burial register from May 17th 1872 to February 20th 1873 where he describes himself as Vicar of Ringmore and Curate:

It is noticeable from the 1870-1871 burial register that after April 14th 1871, the rector of Deopham, Rev. Hibbert Wanklyn had been delegating the funeral services to other clergy. It seems that from April 27th 1872 until May 28th 1873, the Rev. F.C. Hingeston-Randolph appointed a curate (his son) to take over his parish in Devon so that he was free to take charge of Deopham, albeit as a curate. A letter published in the press on March 13th 18731 gives his address as “Deopham” and another on May 31st 18732 gives his address as “Deopham Vicarage, Wymondham”. It would appear therefore that the Rev. Hibbert Wanklyn had moved out during this period.
The announcement of the birth of a daughter on September 23rd gives the address as Ringmore Rectory.

The Rev. Hibbert Wanklyn reappears in the burial register from November 22nd 1873. It seems likely therefore that he was in poor health over this period.

The Rev. F.C. Hingeston-Randolph was a prominent scholar and author in Devon, as well as the designer of a couple of church stained glass windows. He was consulted as an expert on church architecture and restoration.
The Randolph part of his name was adopted from his wife’s family at the wish of his father-in-law.
There is no information as to why he was selected to serve in Deopham for a year: this period is not mentioned in any of the notes concerning his life.
The dates of his release from his duties at Ringmore, Devon, are contained in notes concerning curates at that parish.3
