Alfred William Barrett
Private 1309 Alfred William Barrett was born in Ashwellthorpe. He originally enlisted as 4320 in the 4th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich, then later transferred to the 1st Northumberland Fusiliers. He served in France & Flanders and died on 16th September 1914. He is remembered on La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial and on the Deopham War Memorial.
“News has been received of the death of Alfred William Barrett of the Northumberland Fusiliers. He was reported ‘wounded and missing’ on September 14th, 1914, and, although many efforts have then since been made to clear the matter up, it was only last month that his parents were officially informed of his being killed. ” (The Downham Gazette, Friday 13th November 1915, page 6)
