Introduction

The Branthwait family was based in Hethel in Norfolk and although not residents of Deopham they held Deopham lands in their substantial property portfolio.

The church at Hethel has many memorials to members of the Branthwait family.

Miles Branthwait, senior

There is a substantial monument in the church at Hethel to the memory of Myles Branthwaite who died in 1612.

Arthur Branthwait, senior

According to his son’s memorial (see below) Arthur Branthwait senior was the Chief Justice of the Isle of Ely.

Arthur Branthwait, junior

Arthur Branthwaite junior was admitted to a portfolio of 10 pieces of copyhold property in Deopham and Morley at the Court of the Manor of Deopham Hall held on October 10th 1711. He acquired this property from John Styles.

The Court of the Manor of Deopham of the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury held on August 11th 1713 recorded that Arthur Branthwayte was Steward of that Court.

The following memorial1 in the floor of Hethel church recorded that Arthur Branthwayt, Esquire, died in Bristol in 1724. It noted that he was the son of Arthur Branthwayt, Esquire.

Miles Branthwait

It was recorded at the Court of the Manor of Deopham Hall held on November 26th 1725 that Miles Branthwaite was admitted to the copyhold land he had inherited from his brother Arthur.

This inheritance is further referenced at the Court of Deopham Hall dated October 19th 1742. The copyhold land amounted to 14 acres in 1725 and then 13 acres in 1742, but it is likely that there was further adjoining land that would have been freehold and therefore not listed in the Manorial Court record.

This image of Miles Banthwaite was painted by John Theodore Heins.
