Henry Clarke was one of the first trustees of the Deopham Green Chapel having purchased the land from Mr John Curson in April 1836.
MALLETT

The lettering on the adjacent stone is worn and laminated. There is enough to see that the name is LI… EUGEN.. AUGUSTA M..LLETT. The date is 186..
There is an entry in the church baptism record for the baptism of Lilian Eugenia Augusta Mallett on September 20th 1863 by the Rev. Hibbert Wanklyn1.
The child’s father was Edward Griffin and his profession is given as Miller. He was unmarried at the time of the 1861 census; he is listed in White’s 1864 Directory as a corn miller. There are pictures of the mill here.
The Norfolk Mills website states that he handed over the running of the Deopham mill in April 1864 – one month before the death of his daughter.
Her mother was Jael (maiden name Clarke) who married Edward in September 1861.
The child died on May 15th 1864 of pneumonia aged nine months2.
The 18513 census shows that Henry Clark and Mary A. Clark were living in Stalland Road and had a daughter called Jael. This would indicate that the child whose death is recorded above is the granddaughter of the Henry and Mary Clarke shown on the gravestone at the top of this page.
This is further confirmed by the 18714 census: Edward and Jael Mallett (parents of the child commemorated here) were living with their three children (aged 2,4 & 6) at No 7, High Common, Hardingham. Also in the same household were his mother-in-law “Marianne” Clarke and sister-in-law Julianna. Marianne was 60 giving her a date of birth circa 1811. The Clarke gravestone next to the Mallett gravestone is for Mary Ann Clarke born October 28th 1810. The census enumerators often recorded names phonetically so the spelling is not always exact.
Thirdly
There is a third gravestone alongside the two described above, but the lettering is too worn to have had any success so far in reading it.
Thanks to Steve and Deborah Allen for giving access to these gravestones.
