The Abstract
An abstract of the Lease of the Manor of Deopham Made from William Bragg Esquire to William Cullyer Clerk & Augustine Cullyer dated the 22nd day of May 1676 for 6 yeares remaining from Michaelmas ensuing the date, under certaine Lymittatons and Conditons following:
- To pay yearly at Michaelmas & Lady day £50 in manner follow (viz)
- To the vicar att Michaelmas £3 & Lady day £3 in all £6 yearly;
- To Mr Bragg or his Assigns £22 at Michaelmas and £22 at Lady day, in all yearly £44 or within 21 dayes after dayes of payment.
- An Exception or reservation of all Timber & Timber Trees.
- A Covenant that the Lessor shall repair the Chancell and what damage shall be sustayned by Tempest and to pay all parliament or State Taxes.
- A Covenant that the Lessee shall keep in good repaire the premisses haveing timber allowed him from off the premisses and to keep the fences in good condition.
- A covenant that the Lessee shall allow free Libertie of ingress, egress & regress to see the state of the repaires.
- A covenant that the Lessee shall keep a Court once a year at his owne charge and provide an able Steward at the customary time for the Ellecting of Officers at the Leet.
- A covenant from the Lessor that the Lessee shall enjoy all benefitts appertayneing to the Court to his owne use and benefitt.
- A covenant that the Lessee shall deliver to the Lessor yearly a Rentall & Transcript of the Court Rolls for each year.
The following has been added in a different hand:
There wants a search to be made into the Extent of the Manor to ?er??ser?? the interest & Comanage.
There being a Mill lately built as is conceived upon the Royaltie & the owner denieth fealty & Rent.
I gott a vew of the parish Rates for poor & parliament Taxes and I find the parsonage or Manor Rated at 48 : 00 : 00 yearly
And the vicaridg att 14 : 00 : 00 yearly
Comments
It appears that William and Augustine Cullyer had made a deal with William Bragg to take on his lease for 6 years. Later leases very specifically prohibited this: if there was to be a transfer of a lease, a new lease had to be issued within one year of the new arrangement starting.
The terrar preceding this document in the Canterbury file is dated 1679 and the one after is dated 1699.
