Notes

  1. The Lease as originally written is one solid block of text with no spaces and minimal punctuation. The text has been reformatted and some punctuation added below for ease of reading, but the wording remains the same.
  2. 1821 spellings have been retained.
  3. Words in bold correspond to those so written in the original indenture.

The Lease

A note on the reverse records: 
Sealed and delivered by the with named[in] Anne Elizabeth Amyas and Frances Amyas, in the Presence of:
Elizabeth Clark
Henry Crowe

Comments

  1. The first paragraph shows that George III is no longer king of France.
  2. The terms of this lease are essentially the same as those agreed with the Amyas sisters in their preceding 1814 lease. A few minor formatting changes have been made from the previous lease.
  3. The date of the surrendered lease corresponds to that of the preceding 1814 Indenture.
  4. A new paragraph (see highlight above) has been added preventing the lessees from grubbing up hedges without express written permission from the Dean and Chapter.
  5. The Land Tax is now to be paid in one instalment.
  6. This lease is for a period of 21 years.
