Notes

  1. The Lease as originally written is one solid block of text with no spaces and minimal punctuation. The text has been reformatted and some punctuation added below for ease of reading, but the wording remains the same.
  2. Words in bold correspond to those so written in the original indenture.
  3. Please see the 1742 lease for notes on the meanings of some of the terms used.
  4. The capitalisation of nouns appears inconsistent in the source document; the transcription endeavours to remain faithful to this original.

The Lease

A note on the reverse of records:
Signed, Sealed and Delivered by the within named William Salter Millard in the Presence of:
Charles William Millard, Land Agent, Prince’s Street, Norwich

Comments

  1. The terms of this lease are the same as those granted to the Mr. Millard in 1846, with the exception that:-
    • the land (40 perches in size) upon which the school was built in 1851 is excluded;
    • A number of references to “parsonage” have been dropped, but eight remain.
  2. The date of the surrendered lease corresponds to that of the preceding 1849 lease.
  3. This lease is for a period of 21 years, and appears to be the only one that ran its full course.
  4. One of the witnesses to the signing of this lease is William Salter Millard’s son, Charles William, who (as one of his father’s executors) then took over this lease with his brother Jeffery Watson Millard from 1863 until 1877.
