Life events

Born in Yaxham in 1725.

He was married on November 16th 1749 to Elizabeth Townsend.

Shipdham

The Rev. Colby Bullock M.A. was instituted as Vicar of Shipdham on July 22nd 17541, a post which he held in conjunction with Woodrising until his death on November 19th 1804. He was buried in Shipdham, where there is a memorial in the chancel. A note in the burial register recorded that he had been Rector of the parish for 37 years.

Landowner

According to the record of the Court of the Manor of Shadwells otherwise Cockerells held on May 30th 1782, the Rev. Colby Bullock had come into possession of 2 acres Copyhold land of land in Hawfield (likely to be piece no 122 on the 1814 Inclosures map) as a consequence of being an Executor of the Will of Thomas Bullock, esquire, who was executor of William Bullock, late of Sturston, on the forfeited surrender of John Andrews. Since the adjacent strip was under the same ownership in 1812 and 1814, it is likely that he also owned piece no 121 (see map below).

The Court of the Manor of Deopham of the Dean & Chapter of Canterbury held on March 28th 1783 recorded that he had been a tenant of “certain freehold lands & tenements”.

It was recorded that in 1793 he surrendered lands that were Copyhold of the Manor of the Queen in Wymondham2.

His will proved at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in 1805, refers to substantial property holdings in Shipdham as well as other premises in East Bradenham, West Bradenham, Brooke, Scarning, Letton and Poringland.
The Rev. Colby Bullock left much of his property to his Nephew, known as the Rev. Colby Bullock the younger, who also lived in Shipdham.
