Deopham History

Rev. J. Porter

The Rev. Jacob Porter appears in the Deopham burials’ register from September 1884 until February 1892 and the baptisms’ register from August 1884 to January 1892. He was appointed by the Rev. Hibbert Wanklyn who had advertised in May 1884 for an “energetic, good churchman”:

The 1891 census records him living at the Green in Deopham with his wife Susannah.1 At the time of the 1896 Kelly’s Directory he is described as the Rector of Hackford, although still regarded as a resident of Deopham. He was no longer in Deopham by the time of the 1901 census.

Memorial in Hackford Church:

Curiously, two of his wives appear together on the same memorial inside Hackford church. The second wife2 died two years before the Rev. Jacob Porter; the report of his funeral says that the service took place on the day of his first wedding anniversary. This would confirm that he had a third wife3.
