Sir John Wyndham

The spelling of the surname varies between Wyndham and Windham. The latter appears more frequently in the Court records, although the former is the style more often used by the family.
The Sir John Wyndham who appears in the Court records for the Manor of Shadwells otherwise Cockerells died in 1645; his father, also Sir John Wyndham, died in 1572.
The the last record of Sir John Wyndham as a free tenant of the Manor of Shadwells otherwise Cockerells occured at their Court held on October 16th 1644. Whilst negative evidence is never foolproof, it would appear therefore that the Sir John Wyndham who appears in the Court records would have been the man who died in 1645.


Sir John Wyndham played an important role in the establishment of defence organisation in the West Country against the threat of Spanish invasion.

The Wyndham family were based on the estate of Orchard Wyndham in the village of Watchet in Somerset. They were also owners of Felbrigg Hall in Norfolk.
