1921 Census

The 1921 census (see here) recorded that William Maurice Prewer and his wife May were living on Stalland Road, presumably at Walnut Tree Farm. The 1941 Farm Survey (see below) recorded him as the co-owner of Walnut Tree Farm.

1938 Norman Long

Following the death of his father, Arthur Long, Norman Long moved from Stalland Farm to Walnut Tree Farm.

1941 Farm Survey

Details of this survey for Walnut Tree Farm can be viewed here.

At the time of the 1941 Farm Survey, Walnut Tree Farm was occupied by Mr. Norman Long and was recorded as occupying 73¾ acres. The owners of the farm were recorded as being:

Mr. W.M. Prewer,
Grange Farm,
Fritton,
Norwich.

and

Mr. E.A.R. Pitts
Colliston,
Upper Moulsham,
Chelmsford.

1949 – Alan Phoenix

According to an interview given to the Village Voice radio programme, Alan Phoenix bought Walnut Tree Farm, which was then 29 acres, in 1949, and subsequently increased it to about 180 acres.

The following photograph of the farm was taken in 2007 by Phil Long. He recalls that whilst taking the picture, Edna Phoenix (Alan Phoenix’s wife) invited him in to talk about the Phoenix family.

Mines and Minerals

When the farm was enfranchised (i.e. the copyhold obligations to the Lords of the Manor were bought out), the Lords retained the rights to Mines and Minerals on this farm. This is described here.
