Letter from the letting agents
A letter was sent by the letting agents Smiths Gore & Co dated January 24th 1917 addressed to the Secretary at the Ecclesiastical Commission. This letter is headed:
Canterbury Chapter Estates
Deopham Parish
C. Hurrell 74a 2r 6p £79.10.0 per annum
The letter reported that:
A wooden beam in the kitchen chimney of this farmhouse caught fire in March last [i.e. 1916] which necessitated cutting away the brickwork to remove it and replacing with stout iron bars.
The ceiling and wall paper were also damaged by smoke and the room had to be repapered and the ceiling cleaned.
The sum of £8. 10. 0 is charged in our 1915-16 Cash Account in respect of this work and we beg to request that the expenditure may be approved.
