Introduction

This was the first court of the century and the first in this volume of the “Court Book” which contains the “minutes” of all the courts from 1800 to 1869:

Accordingly, it seems appropriate to treat this court in greater detail than many others. The first four sections present the court record in the summary form used for other courts on this site, attempting to condense the extravagant use of language that occurs in the full record into a table form that is easier to reference.

Whereas at the last General Court Baron  holden in and for this Manor on the Nineteenth Day of November One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety Nine it was presented by the Homage thereof that Thomas Colman, late a Copyhold Tenant of this Manor had died before that Court, seized [in possession] of Lands and Tenements holden of this Manor by Copy of Court Roll Whereupon the first Proclamation was then made for the Heirs of the said Thomas Colman to come into Court and be admitted to the Lands and Tenements whereof he had so died seized [in possession of]. But nobody came and so forth And whereas it appears by the Rolls of a Court holden for this Manor on the Twenty First Day of August One Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty Seven that the said Thomas Colman did then in full Court duly surrender all and singular his Messuages, Lands Tenements and Hereditaments whatever holden of the said Manor by Copy of Court Roll to the Use of his last Will then declared or thereafter to be declared.
Now to this Court comes Thomas Tanwell Colman the Grand Nephew of the said Thomas Colman deceased (by Archibald Rowing his Attorney) and produceth here in Court the Probate of the last Will of the said Thomas Colman deceased bearing Date the Second Day of October which was in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety Eight, one Clause whereof is in the Words following, that is to say:
“And I give and devise [leave in my will] all and every my Messuages, Lands, Tenements and Hereditaments situate, lying and being in Wicklewood [the Terriers do not mention the Manor as having land in Wicklewood] and Crownthorpe [no further mention is made of the Crownthorpe land] in the County of Norfolk with their Appurtenances unto my said Grand Nephew Thomas Tawell Colman and his Assigns for and during the Term of his natural Life, and so forth”. And the said Thomas Tawell Colman (by his said Attorney) craves the Favor of the Lord of this Manor to be admitted Tenant to the Premises as aforesaid devised by him (that is to say):
To Four Acres of Land and Pasture Coyhold of this Manor lying in a certain Close called Burcroft in Wicklewood which Premises the said Thomas Colman deceased had and took up to him and his Heirs upon and after the Surrender of John Colman at the aforesaid Court holden for this Manor the said Twenty First Day of August One Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty Seven as by the Rolls of the same Court doth appear. And the Lord of this Manor doth by the Hands of his said Deputy Steward grant and deliver Seizin [=possession] of the Premises aforesaid to him the said Thomas Tawell Colman (by his said Attorney) by the Rod To hold to him and his Assigns of the Lord of this Manor aforesaid by the Rents Customs and Services therefore due and of Right accustomed Saving every One’s Right and so forth. This Fealty being respited and so forth. And he gives to the Lord a Fine [the fine is the payment made to the Court on change of ownership; it is not a punishment; there is a marginal note saying that the fine in this case was £7 7s] and so forth.

At this Court the said Thomas Tawell Colman (by Archibald Rowing his Attorney) acknowledged to hold of the Lord of this Manor in Free and Common Socage certain Lands and Tenements late Colmans at the Yearly Rent of Two Shillings.
And the said Thomas Tawell Colman putteth the Lord in Seizin [=possession] of the said Rent by paying (by his said Attorney) the Sum of Two Shillings for or in the name of a Relief [i.e. a payment on entering the tenancy].

At this Court the Reverend Ellis Burroughes (by James Barnard his Attorney) acknowledgeth to hold of the Lord of this Manor in free and common Socage certain Lands and Tenements late of Randall Burroughes at the Yearly Rent of Two Shillings and Six pence And the said Ellis Burroughes putteth the Lord in Seizin [=possession] of the said Rent by paying to the Lord the Sum of Two Shillings and Six Pence for or in the Name of a Relief. [Randall Burroughes died in 1818; this transaction is the transference of his copyhold land in Deopham to his son.]

The following image painted by Joseph Zoffany in 1769 shows the Reverend Randall Burroughes and his son Ellis, both of whom are mentioned in the above paragraph.

It is presented by the Homage of this Court that James Garthen late a Copyhold Tenant of this Manor hath departed this Life, since the last General Court holden for this Manor, seized [=in possession] of certain Lands and Tenements holden of the Lord of this Manor by Copy of Court Roll.
And therefore the first Proclamation is duly made for the Heirs of the said James Garthen deceased or the Person or Persons who upon his Death became entitled to the Lands and Tenements whereof he so died seized [=in possession of] to come into Court and be admitted thereto otherwise the same would by the Custom of the Manor for want of a Tenant And no one appearing and so forth the said Proclamation is here recorded and so forth. [The procedure was that the proclamation would be made three times; if no heir came forward after the third proclamation, the property would revert to the Lord of the Manor for disposal as he saw fit.]

The End of the Court Baron.

Now of the Leet
