Heading

TitleShadwell’s otherwise Cockerell’s in Morley:
Special Court Baron at the request of Robert Stoughton
DateApril 22nd 1805
StewardJohn Grand, gentleman, Steward
Location
Page numbers in Court Roll103 – 131

Introduction

This is a particularly long Court (the record occupies 29 pages in the Court Roll, whereas some Courts are only 2 of 3 pages long) because it included the detailed instructions for a “Recovery” as well as the details of the execution of this Recovery process.
The purpose of the “Recovery” was to “cleanse” the property of its entail; without this cleansing Robert Stoughton would have had difficulty in selling his land to Robert Knights and William Colman.

A parallel Recovery took place in the Court of the Manor of the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury which was held on April 22nd 1805 – i.e. the same day as this Court.
