Footnotes

  1. Peter’s Pence were donations made directly to the church at Rome. Whilst initially a donation, by the time of King Canute (1031) they had become a tax of one penny on every hearth or household where the annual rental was above 30 pence.
  2. Blomefield associates these comments with the time “when Norwich Domesday was made”. The Norwich Domesday Book is not to be confused with the Domesday Book of the eleventh century. The Norwich Domesday was drawn up in the early fifteenth century, and is now held in Norwich Cathedral’s treasury.
  3. The Rev. Francis Blomefield lived from 1705 – 1752; after a brief period as rector of Hargham, he became rector of Fersfield where he remained until his death. His history of Norfolk is the most comprehensive ever written, and although not without its critics (e.g. Walter Rye in 1886), it is generally regarded as one of the great county histories.
  4. Advowson: the right in English law of a patron to present to the diocesan bishop a nominee for appointment to a vacant ecclesiastical benefice or church living: a process known as presentation.
  5. A feodary was a feudal tenant – a person who has entered into a mutual obligation to a lord or monarch.
  6. Frank almoigne is a tenure in English law by which a religious corporation holds lands given to them and their successors forever – usually on condition of praying for the soul of the donor and his heirs.
  7. Thomas Goldston II (1495 – 1517) is mentioned in Canterbury Cathedral Priory: a Study in Monastic Administration by R.A. L. Smith as being a capable administrator who as treasurer to the monks of Canterbury was involved in a number of building projects. Deopham is not specifically mentioned.
  8. Blomefield has taken some liberties with Browne’s letter, the text of which is quoted here.
  9. This list of rectors is reproduced here as published by Francis Blomefield. A more complete version with links to information on many of the persons listed can be found on the church history page.
  10. There is more information on the story of Hubert de Rye here.
