Context
The letter is addressed to “Thomas Hardwick Esq, Rathbone Place, Oxford Street, London”, and dated October 6th 1796.
An outline of the principal comments in this letter which concern enclosures is covered in Richard Allen’s document on the enclosures here.
Mr Gilman makes the following comments about the Manors on the second page of his letter:
Comments about Manors
Mrs Amyas as Lessee of the Dean & Chapter has between 50 & 60 Acres more & is in the same Right Lady of “The Manor of Deopham of the Dean & Chapter of Canterbury”.
Sir John [Wodehouse] is Lord of “The Manor of Deopham Hall”.
The Lords of each of these Manors have(I am informed) immemorially exercised Rights of Ownership upon the Soil of these Commons ….
In Blomefield‘s History of Norfolk v.1. p.713 you may find some account of these Manors – Sir John’s is there mentioned under the name of Blomevile’s Manor. I have understood from Sir John that he is willing to have the Rights of the Lords ascertained & agreed upon before an application to Parliament is made, or he will leave them to be determined by the Commissioners for carrying the Act into Execution.
Mr. Ganning is also Lord of a Manor which extends into the Parish of Deopham & of which are holden several Estates in Deopham which have a Right of Common over the Lands proposed to be enclosed; & he desires to have a Allotment made to him as Lord in Proportion with the other Lords …
Mrs Amyas in her own Right is Lady of “The Manor of Knapeles also Roberte’s” but has no Copyhold Tenants – what Rights she may think herself entitled to for this Manor I cannot at present inform you….
Mr. Gilman then continues with more comments related to the proposed enclosures.
