Biography
William Turner was a key member of the Deopham Green Chapel where he was recorded as being a trustee; he was also a trustee of the Low Common Chapel.
The following obituary was printed in the The Aldersgate Magazine published in January 1930 (the Adersgate Magazine continued where the Primitive Methodist Magazine left off):
Mr. William Turner
By the passing of Mr. William Turner the Rockland Circuit and Deopham Green Society have lost one who was keenly interested in their welfare. For many years he was society steward of Deopham Green, and a trustee there and at Deopham Common. When thirteen years of age he gave his heart to the Lord and he found his ways lit up by the presence of the Lord. Born in 1854 at Freethorpe he came fifty-one years ago to Deopham Green. One of his first questions was concerning a chapel. He was told there were two. Through the years his wife proved a faithful helpmeet, taking the greatest interest in the work of the Church and supporting him in his many efforts to further the cause of our Lord. Last year they celebrated their wedding jubilee. It was a great joy to them that their family are also keenly interested in the Church. The Minister conducted the funeral service at which Alderman H. J. Waters, who sixty-one years before had as class leader given Mr. Turner his first class ticket, offered a most helpful prayer.
Burial
According to the Burial Register, William Turner was buried on September 13th 1929 by the Rev. F.J. Harper, a Primitive Methodist Minister attached to the Rockland circuit at that time (not by the Rev. J.S. Treglown the vicar).
His tombstone in the village churchyard includes the following:
“In memory of WILLIAM the beloved husband of JULIA TURNER who passed away Sept 9th 1929 aged 74 years”. The full text of this memorial is reproduced here.
