Oldest persons buried

The oldest person buried in the churchyard according to the registers from 1681 to 1927 was Mary Skipper in 1826 – she was 102 and from Hingham. Elizabeth Gooch in 1914 is recorded in the register as being “about 100” at the time of her death. Royal Tooke was 101 when she died in 2018.

Misc observations

There are sad records of the Rev. William Cullyer burying his own son William in 1682 and then his daughter Elizabeth in 1685.

Generally, the burial registers do not give a cause of death. One conspicuous exception was Samuel Wright in 1800 who was hung for circulating forged bank notes. Sometimes the gravestones give an indication of the cause of death.

Christmas Day

During the period 1681 to 1927 there were six burials on Christmas day; four of those identified were children. Robert Bullock was aged 30 and James Cheney 24.
